During my trip to Kuwait, an interesting, but challenging encounter between two festivals took place – Kuwait International Festival of Monodrama and the Monoplay dance festival from Zadar, Croatia. This event, based in Kuwait, respectively presented a platform for potential collaboration between the two countries’ wider artistic communities.
Despite the cultural differences, a shared commitment to artistic interests showed as a unifying factor. Notably, I found it quite interesting that the Kuwaiti Ministry is named the Ministry of Culture, Arts, and Letters, while its Croatian counterpart is known as the Ministry of Culture and Media. The discussions on the topic of potential collaboration during the visit ranged from organizing actor workshops focused on physical theater and stage movement to assisting the exchange of performances and exploring co-production opportunities.
The festival was well-organized, and everyone—organizers, guests, and performers—made me feel very comfortable and appreciated during the visit to a distant country. The hotel, the Theater and Museum (Adel, name it correctly) were beautiful venues. With meticulous care and concern for all participants, they showed and emphasized their commitment to ensuring a positive and inclusive experience, which I was very pleasantly surprised by. Apart from that, the exhibition featuring photographs, posters, flyers, and booklets presented the performances of the current year and past editions. This showcase festivals’ dedication to improving the realms of theatrical and performance arts.
Participating in this project allowed me to connect with writers, directors, actors, and organizers who shared a common passion for the arts. I extend my gratitude to those who made this experience possible, including (everyone) and especially to my guide and contact person in navigating this happening, Adel Said. This visit shows the doors to potential future collaborative projects that could influence the strengths of both cultures.
